10 Star Wars Characters SAVED By The Expanded Universe
1. Darth Maul
The Phantom Menace is something of a divisive film for Star Wars fans. A 16 year wait between Return of the Jedi and the release of the first prequel movie felt like a lifetime but it really didn't seem worth it on the whole thanks to clunky dialogue, an overly political plot and sodding Jar Jar Binks.
Easily the highlight of this messy return to a galaxy far, far away was the fearsome Darth Maul with his striking appearance, his epic double bladed lightsaber combat and his limited speaking part - Maul utters just 31 words in the film giving him a mystique like no other villain in the franchise.
Sadly, he was literally cut down just as things were getting interesting and many thought that was that for the Zabrak Sith so many were captivated by... but they couldn't have been more wrong.
Yet another Dave Filoni masterstroke saw Maul brought back in awesome fashion in The Clone Wars series and later in Solo, Rebels, and even his own novelisations and comic books that have proven to be amongst the most popular of all.
Maul's reintroduction to the Star Wars franchise changed him from a loyal apprentice to a manipulative, powerful villain who seemed impossible to destroy. Why couldn't it have been that way from the beginning?
