Last Film Entry: Friday the 13th (2009)

What's Going On? Yeesh, talk about a mess.

Since the first Friday the 13th movie slashed its way to the silver screen in 1980, audiences are currently in the midst of the longest period without a F13 film having been released - with it now over 12 years since Marcus Nispel's Friday the 13th remake arrived in February 2009.

There were plans for that redo - which nicely pulled inspiration from the first three Friday efforts - to be the springboard for a new set of films spearheaded by Derek Mears' Jason Voorhees. Despite plentiful rumblings over the years, any further movie has yet to come to pass. And sadly, it doesn't look like we'll be getting a new Friday the 13th any time soon.

Since the 2009 effort, there's been plans for a found footage Friday the 13th film, there's been plans for Friday the 13th: Part 13, there's been plans for Friday the 13th: Camp Blood - The Death of Jason Voorhees, there's been plans for a prequel titled Friday the 13th: The Beginning, and there's even been plans from LeBron James to produce a new F13 movie through his Springhill Entertainment company.

Still, none of these movies have come to pass, and that's largely down to how the Friday the 13th property currently finds itself in the middle of a ferocious legal dispute.

In the most basic of terms, original Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller are embroiled in a battle over who holds the copyright to the series. The last significant move in this issue saw Miller awarded these rights back in September 2018 - with Cunningham continuing to appeal this decision.
