10 Stephen King Universe Fates Worse Than Death

The idea of a possessed car is something only Stephen King could make work. And he really, really makes it work. Christine is a strange novel in that even when it feels like the story may run out of gas (sorry) it manages to twist and turn enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The protagonist of the novel is Dennis, a high-school football player who befriends Arnie, the school nerd who finds a new obsession in the Plymouth Fury, dubbed Christine.

The climactic battle against the titular Christine comes with the loss of all of Arnie's family and almost comes with the loss of Dennis's life as well. But Dennis and his girlfriend Leigh manage to overcome the car with a bulldozer, even as she tries to heal herself and put herself back together again.

The true fear that settles in on Dennis comes in the coda of the novel, as so many of King's protagonists find themselves in. He begins to hear rumours about people who had survived Christine's assaults being picked off one by one in terrible accidents. The novel closes with the fear that, one day, Christine is going to find her way back to Dennis - and make him pay, just like she made the rest of the sh*tters pay.
