10 Stinking 2016 Movies That Scored 0% On Rotten Tomatoes
5. Is That A Gun In Your Pocket?
Or are you just glad to see me? Now the obligatory joke is
out of the way, let’s go in guns blazing (pun intended) and move onto exactly what makes occasional
director Matt Cooper’s new movie worthy of its Rotten Tomatoes slating.
The latest in a long line of films riffing on Aristophanes’ Ancient Greek sex comedy Lysistrata, Is That A Gun In Your Pocket? takes place in a small, trigger-happy Texas town where an incident involving a kid bringing a gun to school prompts local women to withhold sex from their husbands until they give up their beloved firearms.
To give Cooper credit, it could’ve been a pretty good satire on US gun culture if done right. But he didn’t do it right and any intended satire falls flat with its overly clichéd characters – who apart from a stereotypically feisty Latina and Cloris Leachman’s foul-mouthed grandma are basically all manly redneck men and housemaker wives – and reliance on off-colour, unfunny humour. Seriously, there’s even a tasteless reference about the Newtown school shooting. Too soon, guys, too soon.
