1. Joaquin Phoenix's Improvised Dancing
One of the best movies of 2019 by just about any standard or statistic is Todd Phillips' Joker, not least because of the titular character himself. Joaquin Phoenix lent Arthur Fleck an intensity and darkness that will forever stick in the memories of those that watched the movie.
One of the key moments in the story came after Arthur murdered three men on the subway. Unsure what to do, the character fled to a public bathroom. Originally, the script called for Fleck to hide his gun and try to wipe the clown make up off his face, but this is not what made the final cut.
After a discussion between Phoenix and Phillips, they agreed that the scene didn't quite work. The former took the creative liberty given to him by the director and had Arthur embrace what had happened, simply dancing like he had done earlier in the movie.
This scene became one of the most iconic from the entire movie, perfectly capturing the transformation Fleck was experiencing from civilian to Joker, and wonderfully encompassing Phoenix's phenomenal performance as the titular character.
