10 Stupid Arguments About Chris Nolan That Don't Make Sense
5. His Insomnia Is Superior
Not a lot of people know this, but Nolan's first big Hollywood production the first he was offered after Memento made him a big name was a remake. Insomnia is something of a curio in his back catalogue at this point, but it made a bit of a splash at the time by virtue of coaxing Robin Williams into another of those dramatic roles he was oh-so-good at, and managing to get Al Pacino to stop being a parody of himself for ninety minutes. It's a good film, for sure, but in this case it's the Nolan fans who are the problem. Whilst there are plenty of detractors looking to tear down the director via totally BS arguments (and, admittedly, many with legitimate criticisms), at times the Nolan faithful can be just as blindly oblivious to the truth in the face of wanting to further the agenda. Which is loving Christopher Nolan. They get like, tunnel vision about it. So the argument that the Insomnia remake is better than the original purely by virtue of Nolan's involvement is very silly. Very silly indeed. The original 1997 Norwegian film of the same name is vastly superior in almost every way, with Pacino's performance not a patch on Stellan Skarsgård's, and the script going way darker and more interesting than Nolan's ever dares.
