10 Subtle Instances Of Method Acting You Never Even Knew About
6. Halle Berry Didn't Wash For 2 Weeks To Prepare For Her Role As A Crack-Addled Prostitute In Jungle Fever
I don't know Halle Berry, but I imagine that she smells pretty good in real life. There has to be a better way to say that, probably, but I'm going to leave that sentence in. Anyway, when she was preparing for her role in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever as a crack-addled prostitue, Berry used it as an excuse to take 2 weeks out from "being clean."
In order to genuinely smell the way her character likely would in reality, she stopped bathing. Seriously. Thing is, this is truly a subtle touch of method-y acting, because there's no way for us - as movie-goers - to tell how Berry actually smells in the movie - it's just a little inclusion that helped her to feel more like her character, and as a way to give the other actors in the flick something to work from.
"Ask Sam Jackson," the actress once stated during an interview which set out to see if such a rumour were actually true. "He had to get a whiff of it." When filming was over, Jackson presumably bellowed: "Enough is enough! I've had it with this motherf*cking smell on this motherf*cking Berry!," to which the actress promptly responded by showering and balance was, once again, restored to the universe thanks to something Samuel L. Jackson said.
