10 Subtle Movie Easter Eggs Only Hardcore Fans Will Catch

Much like Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith has always been one to indulge his inner pop-culture nerd and hasn't ever been beyond some playful self-referencing. His fans love it, so why not?

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is surely one of the most meta movies ever made, even for Smith's standards, but between the more obvious callbacks to the prior films in his "Askewniverse," there's one shockingly slight gag that appears on screen for just a second or two.

After Justice (Shannon Elizabeth) and her cat-thief pals have ripped off the diamond exchange, we see them celebrating at their apartment, where a banner can fleetingly be seen that reads, "Congrats to us on our 37th heist!"

This all seems totally unremarkable until you consider what the number 37 means within the pantheon of Smith's work.

His iconic debut Clerks features an immortal gag in which Dante (Brian O'Halloran) learns that his girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti) has performed oral sex on 37 men (including him), to which a customer legendarily inquires, "In a row?"
