I'm Thinking Of Ending Things is a 2020 supernatural film which is surreal and otherworldly. Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman and headlined by Jessie Buckley and Jesse Plemons, the feature follows a young couple who are travelling through a snowstorm in order to visit relatives.

This couple haven't been together long, and it soon becomes evident that the young woman is planning on breaking up with her boyfriend. The film is full of creepy atmosphere and a deep sense of unease, and yet one of the creepiest aspects of the movie is the mother of the family they visit – played by Toni Collette – who seems so cheerful, happy, optimistic and positive, the overall effect is extremely uncomfortable. Of course, we won't share spoilers, and there is a reason for Collette's character being portrayed this way, but there is definitely fear factor in the happy mother's demeanour.

We are so used to seeing fearful reactions and scenes in horror films - which is reasonable, for obvious reasons - so to see the extremely happy mother so bubbly and over-the-moon about everything, leaves us all feeling that something is definitely not quite right.
