10 Summer Horror Movies You Have To See

9. The Burning

Released just a year after Friday the 13th, The Burning is a similar slasher film set at yet another summer camp. In the opening scene, a bunch of jerk campers pull a prank on the caretaker. The prank goes array and he's horribly burnt. What's with campers and camp counsellors being so relentlessly cruel in all these movies?

Years later, after being released from the hospital, the caretaker returns for revenge. So this is another camp slasher film where the villain comes back after being wronged in some way, though this time it's the campers that are the targets. While Jason uses a machete, Cropsy’s weapon of choice here is a pair of garden sheers.

Here's another one that taps into the feeling of being a kid and hearing a crazy story over the campfire, with Cropsy being based on an actual urban legend. The special effects are particularly good, done by the genius Tom Savini, who has worked on some of the most iconic films in the genre including The Exorcist, Friday the 13th and Dawn of the Dead.

The movie was rushed into production to capitalize on the slasher craze and the success of Halloween, yet it came out extraordinarily well. To this day, The Burning is considered one of the best slashers of all time. It's a pretty great summer blood bath.
