10 Summer Horror Movies You Have To See

8. Madman

Yet another summer camp movie, this one starts with a group of camp counsellors telling scary stories in the woods on the last night of camp. One of them tells the story of Madman Marz, a guy who apparently killed his entire family with an axe and is said to still be out there in the woods. Uh oh. According to the legend, anyone who says his name any louder than a whisper will summon him.

And then like a complete idiot, one of the counsellors yells his name and throws a rock into Madman's old house. Good one, man. Then, of course, Madman Marz returns and starts picking all the counsellors off one by one.

This movie has everything you'd expect from that setup: characters getting their throats slashed, dumb relationship drama, a really weird scene in a hot tub, characters running around with flashlights, and of course people having sex in the woods, which is never a bad idea.

Interestingly, Madman was actually also inspired by the Cropsy maniac, but when The Burning came out, it was rewritten to be different enough from that film.

Madman was a huge hit in drive ins at the time, and though it was made for an extremely low budget, it still kind of works and has some cool and memorable deaths. It's definitely not anywhere close to Friday the 13th or The Burning, though.
