10 Superhero Teams Who Deserve A Movie After Guardians Of The Galaxy

7. The Authority

From one unconventional team to another, here we have the Authority, a superhero group published under the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics. Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, the Authority were often perceived to be a pastiche of some of the more iconic characters from the mainstream DC universe, but the team became successful in their own right. Story lines tackled huge metaphysical themes including the existence of God and this set the book apart from the standard comic book teams that filled the shelves. The original line up of the Authority included Jenny Sparks who was supposedly the spirit of the 20th century, a man named Jack Hawksmoor who was psychically bonded to cities and The Doctor, a drug addict who possessed the combined powers of all the shamans that came before him. More traditionally powered characters like Apollo and Midnighter were designed to parallel Superman and Batman, but the key difference was that both characters were openly gay and were among the first LGBT superheroes to eventually marry in a comic book. There's a severe shortage of comic book properties aimed exclusively at adults making their way onto the big screen, largely due to the inevitably limited box office return, but if marketed right, The Authority could be a hugely successful film. In an overcrowded marketplace of conventional superheroes, it's time a studio took a chance on a team like The Authority, tackling more intellectually mature themes that challenge audiences conceptions of heroism. The relationship between Apollo and Midnighter may frighten studio executives who would worry about the backlash, but it's about time superhero movies caught up with the 21st century and depicted a genuine homosexual relationship founded on love and not poorly drawn stereotypes.
