10 Superheroes Who Should Get A Movie Before Wonder Woman
7. Supergirl (DC)
Who is this? Supergirl, as her name implies, is Superman's Kryptonian cousin. Leaving Krypton shortly before its destruction, he rocket took longer to reach Earth than Kal-El's. Why is this person a better choice than WW? As addressed in the introduction to this article, making a Wonder Woman movie, is essentially making a female Superman movie, and if that's the goal, why bother introducing all the complexity of the Amazonion society, and general goofiness of a polygraph rope, when YOU ALREADY HAVE A FEMALE SUPERMAN IN YOUR CATALOGUE? By choosing to make a Supergirl movie instead of WW, you have most of the world-building done for you. Audiences are already familiar with Krypton, their powers, their weaknesses, etc... not only that, but she introduces a new perspective on the Superman mythos. Superman knows virtually nothing about Krypton, and experiences its loss merely as an idea. Supergirl grew up on Krrypton, it was her HOME, and with its destruction she lost everything: her friends, her family, everything she knew in her life. The loss of that world is fresh in her mind as well; she's been asleep the entire rocket ship ride to Earth, and when she comes to, expect her to be as emotionally raw and traumatized as anyone you've ever seen in a comic book movie. There is plenty to explore in this story of how she copes with that dramatic loss and adapts to a new world, which is as alien to her as Krypton would be to any of us. Who should be cast? Fans of Smallville would likely champion the cause of that show's Kara Zor-El, Laura Vandervoort, but Warners has shown no desire to cater to the fans of Smallville yet, nor should they in this instance. At 29, Vandervoot is hardly over-the-hill, but she probably IS too old for the take of Supergirl we're likely to get on film. With many young blondes in hollwood, there are a lot of ways WB could go, but the best option would be Saoirse Ronan, from Hanna and the Lovely Bones. The 19-year-old is obviously beautiful but she also has within her the emotional depth a serious take on the character would require.
