Only veteran comedy writer Armando Ianucci could look at the demise of one of Europe's most vile dictators and go "Yeah, I can make that funny."

To his immense credit, 2017's The Death of Stalin is a total riot. Set in the days surrounding the passing of the titular Soviet ruler, the movie casts an absolutely bonkers array of actors as some of Russia's most controversial figures.

Steve Buscemi as Nikita Khrushchev, Michael Palin as Vyacheslav Molotov, and Draco Malfoy's dad as esteemed Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov.

Jason Isaacs is astounding as the brutish, foul-mouthed commander of the Soviet army. Decked out in medals and sporting a thick Yorkshire accent, Zhukov bursts in halfway through the film and is always the most interesting thing on screen.

The accent was a deliberate choice, by the way. Nobody even attempts a Russian accent in this. Probably to avoid a repeat of the DiCaprio situation in Blood Diamond.

Not only is Isaacs really funny, but he's also extremely menacing. In a film full of big talkers, he's one of the only ones you believe is capable of taking extreme action.

An essential part of an excellent film.
