6. Dallas Buyers Club
What Is It: The Dallas Buyers Club details the true story of Ron Woodroof (McConaughey), an HIV positive-tested electrician that starts an underground network of medicine distribution to battle corrupt pharmaceutical businesses.
Why It Could Win Awards: Matthew McConaughey has truly evolved as an actor above his usual rote generic romantic comedy schlock. Lately he has played corrupt lawyers, a possible ephebophile private investigator, and most recently a fugitive looking to reunite with a loved one. Between this and Mud (which currently sits at 99% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), McConaughey is tough competition for Best Actor, something I thought I would never say. All 3 films featuring him this year have Oscar potential. AIDS is also a highly sensitive form of subject matter that the Academy seemingly enjoys throwing a bone towards dating all the way back to Philadelphia. The intentions if depicted sincerely will work in the films favor. Unfortunately there is no trailer yet but the talent surrounding the film is promising.
