And finally, we have a villain reveal so head-smackingly stupid it effectively derails everything good the movie did up to that point.

Alexandre Aja's 2003 French horror film follows best friends Marie (Cécile De France) and Alex (Maïwenn), who spend a weekend at Alex's parents' secluded farmhouse, only to find themselves stalked by a brutal serial killer.

And until deep into its third act, High Tension is a savagely violent, deliciously intense, nasty little film, until Aja makes the bone-headed decision to hurl a twist into the mix, that the killer has in fact been Marie all along, and we've been seeing a dissociated version of events in Marie's mind.

This twist literally breaks the entire logic of the movie and makes whole sequences wide-open to scrutiny, subjective as they are. What should've been a simple but bracingly effective stalker film quickly becomes something much sillier and less convincing.

Cécile de France certainly does her best to sell Marie's turn, but given how abrupt and how idiotic it all is, she doesn't stand a chance.
