10 Surprisingly Good Performances In Terrible Comic Book Movies
6. Djimon Hounsou In Constantine
Constantine is not quite as terrible as everyone seems to think, but it is far from recommendable. Clearly a movie made by a music video director, the film is full of slow motion and supposedly 'cool' visuals, beneath that it lacks the substance worthy of the character. Not to mention the fact that while Keanu Reeves is fine, he couldn't be further away from the Liverpudlian antihero.
A character who does manage to make an impression amongst the overblown visuals is Djimon Hounsou's superbly named Papa Midnight. An enigmatic club owner sitting astride the fence between angels and demons, Hounsou oozes cool and more importantly makes the character so damn mysterious you wish the film was about him instead.
The rare moments he looses his calm. Hounsou bellows his lines with an authority that further deepens the mystery and suggests a history that the script merely skirts around.
Djimon Hounsou seems to be the go to guy for intriguing bit parts and cameos and the guy always gives it his all but Papa Midnight undoubtebly tops the list.
