10 Surprisingly Good Scenes In Otherwise Terrible Movies

2. Embracing Cynicism - Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines

Alien Resurrection Clones
Warner Bros.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his campaign for Governor of California, he took some time to brag about Terminator 3, an entry no one asked for.

It's by no accounts the worst of the series (eat me, McG), but it was coming off of what was at the time considered one of the best action/sci-fi films to date, so expectations were near-impossible to exceed. During his campaign, Arnold claimed that the car chase between a small vet pick-up and firetruck was under-funded, but he liked it so much he invested in it with his own money, exemplifying his fiscal responsibility (we guess?).

But the action is not what makes T3 impressive. They're generally weak, especially in comparison to what came before. What makes T3 a worthy entry is how far it's willing to go plot-wise. This moment, the one that makes the film noteworthy, occurs as the film's end. After escaping the most modern Terminator out to kill the future leader of the resistance, John Connor and his wife learn they had been duped into surviving the inevitable apocalypse, not preventing it.

Finally taking up his position as the leader, Connor comes to accept his Dr. Strangelove-like fate. It's one thing to further a franchise to make a few more bucks, it's another to nuke it and start all over.
