For a big part of The Lion King, Scar actually does seem like he's got everything together. His ploy to kill Mufasa and convince his guilt-ridden nephew that it was all his fault is savage, and goes off swimmingly. Which allows him to take power and turn the prideland into something more of a White Prideland, given all the goosestepping that goes on there.

The problem with Scar is that once he claimed the throne, he just wasn't that good at being a fascist leader. And for someone who was always banging on about being prepared, his whole "torture all of the lions and then alienate the few hyena followers I have left" plan was probably not the greatest.

If all of the other animals hate you and would do everything to take you down, and the only people you have in your corner are a few dumb hyenas, you probably don't turn on the hyenas. You protect them like little precious Faberge eggs. Because when all is said and done, it's those hyenas who really end up taking him down.
