2. Cave Horror Film - The Descent vs. The Cave (2005)
Neil Marshall's The Descent is about six women who go spelunking in a cave system, but soon enough found themselves set upon by some disgusting humanoid creatures lurking there. Bruce Hunt's The Cave is instead about a bunch of women
and men who go to a cave - an
underwater cave instead, folks - and find themselves having to fend off similarly bloodthirsty monsters.
What Came First: The Cave began filming almost 6 months before The Descent, yet miraculously, Marshall's economic direction meant that he was able to get the film released almost 2 months before The Cave.
What Was Better: The Cave was universally panned upon release and scarcely broke even at the box office, whereas The Descent was highly acclaimed for its suspense and was a considerable financial success, making $57m on a £3.5m budget. Sounds like Marshall really trolled The Cave; he started production half a year later in a frenzy and completely stole their thunder. Gotta hand it to the guy.
