10 Swedish Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

7. The Visitors (1988)

To be fair, Joakim Ersgård hasn’t made many movies, and none of them deserves an Oscar (to say the least). However, that doesn’t mean that they’re without merit; this is particularly true for his first full-length venture, The Visitors, which remains his most well-known and highly regarded.

It tells the story of a family (Sara, Frank, and their two children) who move into a countryside house and discover that they’re not the residence's only inhabitants. Although it unabashedly conjures titles like Poltergeist and The Amityville Horror – and it’s far from the most extreme horror film in, well, any respect – there’s enough spookiness and mystery to make it an effectively eerie watch.

As for the often-criticized poor English dubbing and persistent cheesiness, these factors make it charming and rewatchable. After all, many lauded Giallo movies – which, admittedly, tend to be made better than The Visitors in other ways – contain the same beloved detriments, resulting in horrific and humorous elements.

The same is true for The Visitors, so it's a frighteningly fun time the whole way through.
