9. Roland Joffe
The Five Awful Movies: Goodbye Lover, Vatel, Captivity, You And I, There Be Dragons Roland Joffe might sound like an obscure brand of furniture makers that your cousin told you about one time, but no, this guy is a fully-fledged movie director - and a talented one at that. Joffe is best known for movies such as
The Mission and
The Killing Fields, which many would likely agree are bordering on masterpiece territory. Still, at some point in the aftermath of those pictures, something happened to Joffe that rendered him largely incapable of being a director. Maybe it was that uncredited gig on 1993's
Super Mario Bros. adaptation, hm? That's to say, Joffe hasn't made a solid movie since he made
The Mission all the way back in 1987. Take a look at his last five movies. How many of those have you seen? How many have you even heard of? How many have been recommended to you by friends or people who are well-informed about cinema? I thought as much. His next movie,
Singularity, stars Josh Harnett in a central role, which we all know is a concept that never bodes well for either box office or critically success. For such a promising start, Joffe has really eased into mediocrity.
