10 Teaser Trailers Better Than The Actual Movie
2. Tomorrowland
Tomorrowland was an exciting concept that thrived the most through its ambiguous marketing. Plot possibilities were endless and in its teaser, the feverish level of mystery and intrigue was undeniable. Britt Robertson's Casey receives a pin that makes her phase between reality and this 'other' fantastical place. Then upon being enticed by George Clooney's voiceover, she ventures further.
It's such a simple teaser, but so effective. That being said, once you watched the other trailers, you got a much greater sense of what the movie would ACTUALLY be like. Needless to say, Tomorrowland was nowhere near the greatness that the teaser promised.
It was far too convoluted for its own good, often over-explaining and introducing far too many lore bits that the movie overwhelms itself. Beyond that, the tone jumps frequently with awkward bits of intended humor that don't land. That lack of subtlety sticks around to the end, where the viewer is verbally beaten over the head by the antagonist explaining the movie's central message.
By the end, the movie assumes you feel hopeful and full of wonder, when you're actually put off by the mean-spirited nature of its message. If they stuck closer to what the teaser went for, a sense of wonder and mystery, maybe it could've been a journey worth taking.
