10 Terrible Blockbusters That Wasted An Awesome Cast
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
In stark contrast with Marvel Studios' assured handling of their shared cinematic universe, Sony seems to be throwing everything at the Spider-Man franchise in the hope that something sticks. While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 does have plenty of entertaining moments, the final product bears the heavy fingerprints of studio interference. Instead of focusing solely on delivering a standalone superhero adventure, Marc Webb's sequel greatly suffers from attempting to shoehorn in an unnecessary number of supporting characters and subplots in an attempt to expand the Spider-Man mythology, which turned a potentially-promising sequel into an underwhelming, tonally-confused and narratively half-baked blockbuster. Which is a real shame, as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 boasts an impressive ensemble cast that manage to do their best with the weak material on offer. Once again the sparkling chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone provides the real heart of the movie, with Garfield proving equally adept at the action, humor and emotion required from the character of Peter Parker. Jamie Foxx does his best with the underwritten Electro, transitioning from put-upon office drone to calculating super-villain with a performance that just manages to stay on the right side of scenery-chewing, while Dane DeHaan's layered portrayal of Harry Osborn becomes a lot less interesting once he dons the Green Goblin armor. Amongst the supporting cast, Chris Cooper and Sally Field bring the requisite gravitas to their minor amounts of screentime, while Paul Giamatti seems to be enjoying himself thoroughly in his over-the-top glorified cameo as Rhino. Upon watching The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it seems fairly obvious that the narrative went through a hefty reshuffle in the edit suite, and while there are plenty of problems with the movie the acting performances aren't one of them.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
