Atlantis: The Lost Empire was something of a serious departure for Disney's animated fare up until that point, verging into sci-fi territory and taking its visual cues from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, of all people. It underperformed at the box office but it remains something of a cult favourite for fans.

Its straight-to-video follow-up however does not stand in the same esteem and indeed is a mostly forgotten endeavour. Atlantis: Milo's Return actually started life as three separate episodes of a spin-off television series that was quietly cancelled after the original film failed to meet expectations, in effect replacing plans for a genuine sequel called Shards of Chaos - and its particularly disjointed feel shows.
