10 Terrible Horror Movies That Are Actually Awesome

6. Bug (2006)

Bug movie
Lionsgate

Directed by the great William Friedkin and written by Tracy Letts, the underrated Bug stars Michael Shannon as a troubled soldier convinced he's being monitored by the government and plagued by creepy crawlies we never actually see.

A bizarre tale of paranoia and madness, Bug's ambiguity and general sense of dread are admittedly dampened by its melodrama and frustrating non-ending, but these flaws aren't quite enough to entirely destroy the film's potential, or completely derail its psychological thrills.

Anchored by the committed, unhinged performances of Shannon and Ashley Judd, the horror flick is silly and a touch too odd for its own good, but is executed with such energy and disturbing imagery it works well despite its obvious weaknesses.

Entertainingly weird as it may be, though, Bug doesn't quite match the brilliance Friedkin and Letts' next collaboration, Killer Joe, some five years later.
