10 "Terrible" Movie Sequels That Are Actually Good

4. U.S. Marshals

Psycho 2 Norman Bates
Warner Bros.

A spin-off of the critically-acclaimed The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals focuses on Jones' U.S. Deputy Marshal Sam Gerard as he attempts pursue, well, another Fugitive - who is portrayed by Wesley Snipes.

The problem with having Jones return to the character that won him an Oscar was that the film was always going get compared to its Academy Award-nominated predecessor, so the fact that its plot was somewhat derivative of it automatically set it up for failure. And yet it didn't fail... not entirely, anyway.

U.S. Marshals may not be as clever as its predecessor (though not for lack of trying), and there may be some behaviour that doesn't feel like it's totally in-line with what we already knew about Jones' character, but on its own and out of context, it's a ridiculously entertaining action thriller.

The film works well as a standalone feature and it offers up plenty of genuinely thrilling moments, including a couple of high-energy chases and some stunning set pieces. And both Jones and Robert Downey Jr. were bloody brilliant the whole way throughout.
