10 Terrible Movies That Still Smashed The Box Office

4. The Transformers Franchise

Outside of 2023's Transformers One, which quite ironically is easily the best outing in the entire franchise, no modern-day Transformers film has pulled in less at the global box office than $440 million. Though considering the astronomical budgets in play of over $200 million, the $605 million return for The Last Knight and the aforementioned $440 million for Rise of the Beasts were considered as underperforming.

However, on the other side of that coin is the incredible success seen by the first two movies, Transformers and Revenge of the Fallen, which pulled in over $1.5 billion between them, before Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction both joined the billion-dollar club.

Amazingly, all of this money has been brought in by a franchise with so few genuinely good entries, namely 1986's animated Transformers: The Movie, the 2018 spin-off Bumblebee, and Transformers One.

They may look spectacular, there is no real debate to be had there, but there is generally very little, if anything, going on underneath. Style over substance has never been portrayed in cinema more, and if the decreasing box office numbers are anything to go by, it may be that this strategy is coming to the end of its course.
