10 Terrible Movies That Still Smashed The Box Office
3. Minions
When Despicable Me was first released back in 2010, Steve Carell's Gru was somewhat overshadowed by his army of yellow, alien sidekicks. The Minions took the world by storm, they were incredibly popular, and you couldn't move without seeing their faces on merchandise everywhere you went.
Naturally, it wasn't too long before their popularity was milked with a spin-off, a sequel to that spin-off, and a further sequel that is set to release in 2026.
The Minions movie released in 2015, between Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3, and with neither Gru, Lucy (Kristen Wiig), or the girls in sight, earned itself an incredible $1.159 billion at the box office. This was the highest-grossing entry in the franchise at the time, and a record that is still in tact ten years later.
The film may have capitalised on the popularity of the Minions, as did the sequel seven years later, and brought in a stacked cast including Sandra Bullock, John Hamm, and Michael Keaton, but it is a cash grab and nothing more. A successful cash grab, certainly, but it was forgettable at best and outright cringeworthy at worst. Still, if the franchise keeps bringing in the big bucks like it has been, don't expect Minions 3 to be the last we see of them.
