10 Terrible Star Wars Ideas That Nearly Happened

Yoda is one of the most mysterious characters we meet in the Original Trilogy, and a part of that is down to his look: he's an odd, wizened figure, and extremely unlikely to be one of the most powerful Jedi to ever live. Which is, of course, why the Yoda reveal works so well.

Would it have worked as well, though, if he'd looked like a monkey? Or what about a gnome? Or even a smurf?

All were considered during the development of the character, and while the Yoda we end up with is strange looking, it's more fitting than the other concepts. Ok, maybe the latter two weren't quite so egregious - yet would've suffered by being similar to other recognisable things - but the monkey idea, which would've seen a real animal in a mask, is absolutely horrendous. Yoda was also called Buffy in earlier versions, which itself wouldn't have been awful, but would've meant that a certain vampire slayer ended up quite differently.
