10 Terrible Things Everyone Forgets About Beloved Movie Characters
7. Marty Mcfly Stole Johnny B Goode
The Back To The Future movies are stone cold classics, no two ways of thinking about it. Funny, heartfelt, with some of the tightest time travel rules in film history. But there's no question that the first one is the best of the bunch, despite the existence of a certain plot point that people love to poke at as a major oversight on the film's part.
For those not in the know, what's considered the world's first rock n' roll song is Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry. As you can imagine, the African American community takes quite a bit of well-earned pride in the fact that they basically invented one of the two greatest American genres of music in the world. The other being Jazz, which they also invented.
So eyebrows can't help but be raised when near the end of the movie, Marty McFly, an '80s suburban white kid, proceeds to sing the eponymous song, almost five years before it was actually first recorded. To add icing onto this problematic cake, one of the other musicians present is Chuck's cousin, who proceeds to have him listen to the music via telephone.
Look, nobody is here to accuse anyone of anything. But this scene basically paints the picture of a white kid inventing rock n' roll, and a black man stealing the song. More than likely a mere oversight on Zemeckis' part, but definitely one that lands squarely in the "Yikes" category.
