10 Terrible Things Everyone Forgets About Beloved Movie Characters

6. Ferris Bueller Is A Manipulative Jerk

Ferris Bueller is meant to be taken about as seriously as your average Deadpool comic, and even that's handing it a bit too much credit. This is a movie where one kid gets sick and the fact of him being sick is blown up on the side of a building in order to inform the world that this one teenage boy has the flu.

Shame then that the main character, the eponymous Ferris Bueller is - just - the worst. Even in the context of a screwball, slightly surrealist comedy such as this, the character is often shown to be manipulative, smug, self indulgent and uncaring about other people. Not helped by Mark Wahlberg playing him like every smirking animated movie poster brought to life.

Sure his principle is an ass of an ox who likely deserves to get clowned on by Ferris, but his best friend Cameron does nothing to deserve Ferris constantly dragging him into his nonsense. If there was something legitimately wrong with how Cameron was living his life that would be one thing, but besides having issues standing up for himself, there really isn't anything about him that suggests he needs Ferris to intervene.

Jerks in comedies can not only be funny, they can be hysterical. But there has to be some form of karmic comeuppance for said jerk to balance things out. But hey, at least Ferris mainly intended to only mess with those he felt deserved to be messed with, and he made sure no one actually got hurt. No, that's for the next entry.
