10 Terrible Threequels That Ruined A GREAT Trilogy

5. Addams Family Reunion

1991's The Addams Family was an ultra-stylish, hilariously macabre black comedy that benefitted enormously from the note-perfect casting of its ensemble.

And yet, sequel Addams Family Values thoroughly outdid it, amping up the laser-sharp satire, giving Christina Ricci's Wednesday greater screen time, and introducing a legendary villain in Joan Cusack's murderous nanny Debbie Jellinsky.

But a planned third film underwent a substantial reworking after two unfortunate outcomes - the commercial underperformance of Addams Family Values, and the death of Gomez actor Raul Julia in 1994.

And so the threequel, Addams Family Reunion, was reconceived as a direct-to-video affair with an almost entirely new cast, save for Lurch and Thing actors Carel Struycken and Christopher Hart.

While Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah simply couldn't live up to Julia and Angelica Huston's performances as Gomez and Morticia, what truly killed this movie was the decision to shift away from the dark humour and social commentary of the two previous films.

Intended to serve as a backdoor pilot for a TV series, Addams Family Reunion was sanitised to the point of tedium, ensuring that most fans just pretend that this sequel doesn't exist - a feat of self-deception that isn't difficult at all.
