3. Humans Aren’t From Earth – Moonfall

Scream VI

Roland Emmerich has directed many dumb disaster flicks throughout his career, including Godzilla, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012. However, Moonfall has to be the most brainless of the lot, mainly because it tries so hard to be clever.

In this sci-fi flick, NASA discover the moon is falling to Earth, which will result in humanity's extinction. As stupid as that sounds, it's what we've come to expect from the disaster genre (and Emmerich), so it's easy to get on board with this premise.

But instead of letting the movie be silly, Moonfall devises an overelaborate twist to explain why the celestial satellite is out of whack. When our heroes venture to the moon, they learn it's an artificial megastructure created by mankind's ancestors in another galaxy billions of years ago to safeguard Earth from malevolent space robots that... you've already stopped reading, haven't you?

Sadly, this exposition adds nothing to the story, except confusion. Why couldn't the moon just be the moon? Although removing this gobbledegook subplot wouldn't have made Moonfall good, it would've stopped the film from becoming a laughing stock.
