10 Terrifying German Horror Movies You Probably Haven't Seen
4. Der Bunker (2015)
Part of the new wave of German horror, Der Bunker is a bizarre movie that is especially hard to pin down and categorise. Written, directed and produced by Nikias Chryssos in 2015, the film stars Pit Bukowski, Daniel Fripan, Oona von Maydell and David Scheller in what is easily one of the most bizarre and genuinely disturbing releases in recent times.
Der Bunker's story revolves around a young student who rents a room in a lakeside house in order to find some peace and quiet. However, it's soon revealed that the room he's rented is actually a bunker, owned by a family of a mother, father and their son who they claim is only eight years old but is in reality far, far older.
With its themes of childhood, growing up through adolescence and the role of education, Der Bunker blurs the lines between cosmic horror, gritty thriller and all out comedy in a way few other movies have ever managed. It went onto pick up numerous accolades including Next Wave Award for Best Film at Fantastic Fest and Best Film at La Mano Festival in 2016.
And with Chryssos himself claiming that the film is totally intended to be a serious thing rather than a dark comedy, it's unsettling sequences become that little bit punchier in sending a chill down an audience's spine.
