10 Terrifying Horror Films That Exploit Your Everyday Fears
5. Fear Of Rejection - Frankenstein (1931)
To describe Frankenstein to someone who is somehow unfamiliar with the classic tale, one could imagine that the horror came from the Creature itself: a lumbering, manmade monster, created from crudely stitched together dead bodies and given life by a lightning bolt. But it isnt the Creatures appearance, nor even his actions, that have seen this story remain relevant and terrifying for almost 200 years (originally published in 1818, yet another film adaptation is to be released this November). When the Creature is brought to life, its as a naïve innocent who is too quickly shunned by his father; its fright at its first glimpse of fire is misunderstood as aggression and his creator swiftly locks him in a dungeon, deciding hes a danger to all society and must be put down. Far from being born a monster, the Creature becomes one over time, as he faces rejection after rejection after rejection. Anyone who doesnt feel pangs of sympathy and fear for the Creature, even as he becomes the beast that society has dubbed him, has clearly never been made to feel like an outsider.
