10 Terrifying Horror Movie Villains Hiding In Plain Sight

6. The Train - Gin Gwai

Hereditary Monster
Mediacrop Pictures

Gin Gwai, translated to The Eye, is one of the OG Asian horror movies that suffered from the Hollywood adaptation craze. And whilst Jessica Alba's harried performance was fine enough, the 2008 remake has nothing on Gin Gwai's original ethereal creepiness.

The Eye is the story of blind violinist Mun, who has finally been donated a pair of eyes for a cornea transplant and undergoes a successful surgery. Able to see for the first time since she was two, Mun adjusts to her newfound senses, but discovers that her eyes work a little too well: she's seeing people that no-one else can.

Mun is barraged with Sixth Sense level nightmares as she attempts to unravel what's happening to her - but these horrifying entities don't always bother her in obvious ways. Sometimes, they're happy enough to simply lurk at the edges.

A perfect example of this is when Mun and her psychotherapist are travelling by train through a tunnel. Transitioning from day to night and back again instantaneously, it's a blink and you'll miss it moment - in the train window behind the unaware duo, a ghostly woman's face appears in the reflection as the glass goes dark. There's plenty more subtlety to the film, but this small, spooky moment stands out as one of the most unnerving.
