A direct adaptation of Lovecraft’s short story of the same name (well, a very loose one), this flick from recently deceased horror legend Stuart Gordon (RIP) sees a team of intrepid scientists attempt to recreate the ambitious, dimension-hopping antics of a crazed doctor who recently accidentally offed himself in the process of attempting to see the mysterious “beyond”.
It’s a plan which can only end well, and after a slow burn build up and some superb hamminess from scream queen icon Barbra Crampton, the entire affair culminates in some extremely gory but terrifically realized body horror which has influenced everything from James Gunn’s horror comedy Slither to the gruesome political satire Society.
