10 Terrifying Horror Movies Inspired By H.P. Lovecraft
7. Dagon
Another direct adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s work, what 2001’s gory and dark Dagon gains in terms of quality it loses in terms of accuracy to the source material. After all, the film is actually adapted from the famous story The Shadow Over Innsmouth, not a separate unrelated story entitled Dagon.
Despite this misstep, this uneven but undeniably effectively realized small town chiller, which sees its protagonist horrified to discover his ancestral fate upon a visit to his small hometown, is an appropriately horrific distillation of Lovecraft’s bleak and brutal style into bloody, and bloody hopeless, horror cinema.
Flawless it’s not, but you could do far worse in terms of pure Lovecraftian terror.
