It's doubtful that you've spent your life without having heard of John Carpenter's The Thing, but if you haven't then you're in for a treat when you finally experience it. The plot follows a group of researchers in Antarctica, as they are hunted and picked off by a horrifying creature who can assume the appearance of their victims. As can be expected, this leads to an overwhelmingly claustrophobic and paranoid experience that has you questioning if anything you're seeing is real.
Alongside the enthralling premise and sublime pacing, the title is chock full of that legendary Carpenter style, with lavish practical effects and thoughtful attention given to the gore. Plus the creature itself will haunt your nightmares due to its phenomenal presentation and visual impact.
Kurt Russell does a brilliant job of leading the film as MacReady. He truly drives the stakes of the operation home and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, as he and the others attempt to uncover the identity of the beast and survive.
