5. Tilda Swinton - Suspiria
The idea of a movie about a group of evil witches who own a dance company probably doesn't sound like a terrifying prospect, but this remake of the 1977 film of the same name takes you on a pure journey of fear and horror. While the two and a half hour runtime is a little out of character for the spooky genre, it wastes none of your time, and towards the end, you'll likely be wishing for even more.
Suspiria follows the young and innocent Susie - played by Dakota Johnson - who has recently joined a world-renowned dance company. However, soon the organisation's truth begins to emerge, and all the characters become engulfed in a hauntingly inescapable delve towards chaos.
Its focus on using dance as an expression of ritual and fear works incredibly well, as the sublime choreography combines perfectly with the twisted and gory imagery. There is a perfect contrast between the beauty of the physical performances and the downright terror of the company's real intentions.
The Ancient One herself (Tilda Swinton) plays three roles in the film: the dance director Madame Blanc, the psychotherapist Dr Klemperer, and the horrifying Helena Markos - the hidden matriarch of the coven. She excels in all three, and acts as a great recurring presence throughout the flick.
