It's easy to forget that nobody dies in a story when the characters can't go more than two minutes without yapping about... you know... death.

In 1408, a paranormal debunker called Mike Enslin (John Cusack) agrees to stay in a haunted hotel room, even after the concierge, Gerard Olin (Samuel L. Jackson) informs him that 56 occupants died within an hour of entering.

Though not as renowned as Stephen King's other film adaptations, 1408 deserves more attention.  Despite the straightforward premise, the mind-melting thriller is bursting from the seams with nerve-shredding innovation and WTF imagery. Not only does the protagonist have to endure a deluge of ghosts, he's plagued by visions and tragedies of his past, to the point where he can no longer tell what's real.

But it gets worse. After Mike seemingly wins by surviving the whole hour, the room resets everything and begins tormenting him all over again.

Rather than giving up, Mike ultimately destroys the room, allowing him to live to see another day, (in the theatrical cut, at least). As such, 1408's kill count by the end is zero.
