Ten years after its release, The Babadook still proves to be one of the scariest horrors of the 21st century.

The bloodcurdling frightfest, which was Jennifer Kent's directorial debut, revolves around a widow called Amelia and her son, Samuel, who are tormented by a monster called Mister Babadook, who originated from a pop-up book.

It's remarkable how much of an impact the top hat-wearing beast leaves, considering he's never clearly seen. On top of that, Mister Babadook doesn't manage to kill anyone.

However, the shadowy demon has no intention of slaughtering his prey. Instead, he uses his dark power to amplify Amelia's resentment towards her son, hoping to drive her to murder. (Also, the creature's eardrum-shattering screech is enough to turn anyone crazy.) Every time the grieving mother looks at the creature's storybook, it manifests more and more sickening imagery to break her mind.

Since the fiendish phantom represents Amelia's unresolved grief over her husband, it makes the confrontations between the two not just frightening, but genuinely heart-breaking.

Even though matters are somewhat resolved by the end, The Babadook is sure to leave anyone rattled for a long time.
