10 Terrifying Horror Movies Where Nobody Dies
2. Freaks
Released nearly a century ago, there are few films that generated a stir quite like 1932's Freaks.
Tod Browning's horror drama, which focuses on a circus troop of self-proclaimed oddities, created such an uproar, the director was forced to cut a third of the footage. Since the released version is barely an hour long and missing nearly half its scenes, it should've been an incomprehensible mess.
But even by today's standards, Freaks still manages to be fittingly freaky. Although modern audiences shouldn't balk at the characters' unusual physical attributes, watching a limbless man with a knife in his mouth crawling towards the camera in the pouring rain is an image that's sure to stick with anyone.
Even when nothing particularly scary is going on, there's a feeling of dread permeating throughout, especially after the "freaks" prepare to punish the new member, Cleopatra, after learning her malignant intentions.
Nobody croaks in the movie, but Cleopatra does suffer a fate far worse than death. It's easy to understand why Freaks provoked such a controversy back in its day, and continues to endure as a horror classic.
