10 Terrifying Monsters In Non-Horror Movies

From Judge Doom to Star Wars' Rancor, these monsters were straight from a horror movie.

Horror is a genre that many people don't mess with, and it's easy to see why. Who would want to spend their time and money putting themselves through hell as a form of entertainment? Well, a lot of people, obviously, but it still makes sense that plenty of cinema-goers avoid it like the plague.

Still, there are times when horror seeps through the cracks of somewhere it doesn't belong.

Plenty of movies steer clear of spooky shenanigans, opting instead to give their viewers a fun or wholesome adventure. Some of these films still feature horror elements, such as monsters. But for the most part, these beasts are altered accordingly to make them far less scary. However, some monsters don't get the memo.

Yes, sometimes you'll enjoy a simple film only to find a horrendous creature that pulls you out of your comfort zone and into terror. This is a rare occurrence, but it does happen, with the following 10 beasts being some of the most shocking examples.

It just goes to show that you'll never truly be safe from the horrors of the world, no matter what film you're watching.

10. The Rancor - Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi

The Star Wars series explores the farthest reaches of the galaxy, and as such, it is home to an array of terrifying monsters. Still, the Rancor takes the cake for being the scariest among them.

We're introduced to this beast in Return of the Jedi as Jabba the Hut sends his victims into its pit, with nothing but screams afterward. This immediately instills a sense of dread about what this creature looks like, which is answered after Luke (and an unlucky Gamorrean) gets thrown in with it. The Rancor is revealed for the first time here, and it's terrifying.

The Rancor's design is nice and simple. It's a big monster with a powerful jaw, armoured skin, and arms, meaning it can grab you and move around freely. The only way to stand a chance against it is if you're a Jedi. It's also brought to life with some delightful VFX from the stop-motion master Phil Tippett.
