7. Final Destination
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRrd3R6MsM8 Granted, the actual depiction of the plane crash in Final Destination is only a premonition, but when the actual crash occurs moments later (which we see only from a considerable distance), it's presumed to perfectly reflect what happens here. What makes the scene work is the fear and suspense throughout; protagonist Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) is already terrified of flying, and after a turbulence scare, the proverbial truly hits the fan, as the plane begins to spiral out of control. It's the manic energy, the sense of panic that allows us to buy into what is going on, and then finally, the inevitable money shots, as people start getting ripped out of their seats into the sky, and the plane explodes in a gigantic fireball. Few films prior to Final Destination had attempted to handle complex visual effects-driven plane crashes - and fewer still convincingly - and so it's one of the very first films to provide a brutal vision of an accident like this that was actually half-way convincing.
