Whether it's Creepshow, Channel Zero, or Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, anthology horrors deliver a variety of bite-sized scares in a single package. One anthology which doesn't get enough praise, though, is Hulu's short-lived Monsterland.

Based on North American Lake Monsters, a collection of short stories by Nathan Ballingrud, each of the eight episodes revolves around a troubled character whose situation becomes increasingly desperate when they're faced with strange and supernatural occurrences. These include a mother struggling to raise her unruly child, a couple coping with mental health, and a bride-to-be confronted with a traumatic event from her past.

Unlike conventional horror outings, the monsters aren't the focal points. Rather, they're used as extensions of the characters' inner turmoil as each standalone tale explores the bleakest aspects of human nature. The terror is instead rooted in a lingering sense of dread which stems from the slow-burn, character-driven plots that result in just as many gut-wrenching emotional blows as they do supernatural chills.

Fronted by an incredible cast featuring Kaitlyn Dever, Kelly Marie Tran, and Mike Colter alongside acclaimed directors like Babak Anvari and Nicolas Pesce, there's no shortage of talent involved in what may be one of the most underrated shows in recent years.
