The horror genre as it's known today has been a prominent part of culture for hundreds of years. From pioneers of Gothic literature to classic monster movies to the emergence of survival horror video games, there's been no shortage of spooky creations for horror fans to appreciate.

One aspect of the genre that doesn't get as much attention is horror TV shows. While there are notable exceptions that have made lasting impressions on popular culture like The Twilight Zone, American Horror Story, and Mike Flanagan's consistently solid Netflix series, there are countless others that pass by unnoticed.

With dozens of offerings from around the world arriving on an assortment of streaming platforms, horror series have become an untapped reservoir of ghoulish delights waiting for genre fans to dive into. Whether it's supernatural terror, cerebral chills, or something completely different, there are offerings that cater to every taste and subgenre.

Although the internet and word of mouth have meant that some underseen shows have started to get the recognition they deserve, there are still just as many terrifying TV shows that remain unknown to many avid viewers.

School is over for Rochelle (Isis Hainsworth) and her friends in BBC miniseries Red Rose. However, what was supposed to be a summer of partying quickly becomes a nightmare after Rochelle downloads a mysterious app called Red Rose onto her phone. While the app initially appears to be a stroke of good fortune, it's not long before events take a sinister turn as it begins to manipulate her, eventually leading to tragedy.

As the app infiltrates the lives of others in the group, the friends work together to figure out who (or what) is behind it. What starts as a suspenseful supernatural thriller about a potentially haunted app evolves into a gripping thriller filled with surprising twists and turns that will keep viewers on their toes throughout each of the eight episodes.

Tapping into themes of trauma, this underappreciated British horror depicts a dark side of technology that rivals Black Mirror. As the teenagers get closer to uncovering the secrets behind Red Rose, they discover that the truth is far more disturbing than they could have imagined.

Described by the showrunners as "Scream or The Ring, but in Bolton," Red Rose is an incredible techno-horror that's waiting to be discovered.
