Adapted from the French series of the same name and helmed by horror filmmaker Fede Alvarez, Calls is an eerie anthology series that's unlike anything else.

Like its title suggests, each of the short episodes is comprised of a single phone call which sees strange events unfold around the respective characters. While each instalment may seem like its own self-contained narrative, plot points gradually connect as the series progresses to eventually reveal what's really going on.

Although Calls is closer to a radio play than a conventional horror series, the minimalist visuals are nevertheless integral to the experience. The visual representation of the audio track breaks apart and shifts into various shapes and patterns as the characters' situations worsen, amplifying the uneasy and surreal atmosphere.

Even without the images, the stellar performances from the star-studded cast are more than enough to draw viewers into their increasingly peculiar ordeals. Featuring Karen Gillan, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and many more, each actor is nothing less than spectacular here.

Despite its captivating mystery and outstanding cast earning this show heaps of critical acclaim upon its release, this Apple TV show rarely gets the attention it deserves.
