Set in a near-future India that's controlled by an oppressive military regime, Netflix series Ghoul sees promising young officer Nida (Radhika Apte) recruited to work at a secretive underground prison. Her job is to interrogate notorious terrorist leader Ali Saeed (Mahesh Balraj), who's due to arrive later that day. Before she gets a chance to sit down with him, however, terror descends upon the facility when Ali is revealed to be possessed by a malevolent entity.

Despite only being three episodes long, Ghoul is a gripping slow-burn chiller that gradually ratchets up the tension as the titular threat's influence causes paranoia and fear to spread amongst the group. A handful of effective scares and a generous helping of gruesome imagery likewise add to the growing sense of unease until all-out carnage erupts during the explosive finale.

Alongside the supernatural thrills, a compelling mystery is also woven throughout this miniseries that seeks to uncover who summoned the creature and their reasons for doing so. As Nida begins to understand the truth, she's forced to reflect upon her own beliefs in a biting critique of authoritarianism and religious persecution.

Despite its short length, there's a lot packed into this excellent series that horror fans will adore.
